While cities around the world are facing a shortage of livable housing options and resources, MINI hopes to address a number of these issues for the average urban dweller with future projects intended to create housing concepts that are sustainable and different from anything we're currently used to. It's called MINI LIVING.

First, MINI partnered with New York-based firm SO-IL to create a "forward-thinking interpretation of resource-conscious, shared city living within a compact footprint." The prototype structure is made of a translucent fabric membrane which stretches across a metal frame and rises vertically from a 50-square-meter plot. It houses six rooms and a roof garden all while adhering to the MINI LIVING principles of "creative use of space and minimal footprint."

Esther Bahne, Head of Brand Strategy and Business Innovation MINI said that "MINI LIVING calls into question conventional living concepts and introduces a creative problem-solving approach for future challenges in urban areas. The installation shows what happens when we view houses not only as a space in which to live, but as an active part of our environment - one which plays a positive role for the environment and the people living there."

Now, MINI is shifting their attention to China, where an abandoned industrial complex in the Jing'An district of Shanghai will be transformed into a multi-layer co-living initiative made up of apartments, working spaces, and cultural/leisure offerings. MINI LIVING's concept of sharing living quarters and work spaces not only applies to the buildings residents, but the city as a whole.

"MINI has always been an urban brand. It not only has its finger on the pulse of the city, it injects that pulse with extra energy," explained Peter Schwarzenbaur, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, who is responsible for MINI Customer Experience and Digital Business Innovation BMW Group. "At MINI we are also well versed in the intelligent use of space; back in 1959 the classic Mini was already maximizing the experience available within a very small footprint. MINI LIVING brings this know-how from the vehicles we drive into the places where we live."

The MINI LIVING initiative hopes to create an alternative to the rental market in big cities and offer a place that will adapt to its residents in a fresh and flexible way, the same way MINI vehicles have.
