MINI plans to initiate a joint project with China's Great Wall to produce battery-electric MINIs in uncharted territory.

MINI's parent company, BMW Group, said that it sees a tremendous opportunity for all-electric MINIs in China. China serves as the largest market for EVs, or as the Chinese government calls them, "new-energy vehicles." The MINI plant in Oxford, England is currently set to produce the electric MINI in 2019.

With the letter of intent in place, MINI and parent group BMW are left to discuss further details with Great Wall to determine a production facility and finalize the investment figures for the project. In 2017, China was MINI's fourth-largest market producing roughly 35,000 units.

BMW Group has stated that this strategy of expansion could only accelerate growth of the MINI brand as opposed to hurting their commitment to England.
