MINI of San Antonio wants to say happy birthday to MINIs everywhere! This week we celebrate the 59th anniversary of the inaugural launch of the miniature cars that started it all--the Austin Seven and the Morris Mini-Minor. What many people don't know, however, is the wealth of history behind this beloved classic and how exactly this popular auto came to exist. In 1956, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser decided to nationalize the Suez Canal in response to financial withdrawal from the West due to Egypt's Communist affiliations. In doing so, Nasser created one of the largest fuel crises the world has ever seen that ultimately led to fuel shortages and rationing all around Europe. German automakers quickly saw a need and rushed to fill it with small, fuel efficient cars. Sir Leonard Lord--the head of British Motor Corporation--wanted to produce an English alternative and looked to chief engineer Alec Issigonis to make it happen.

Swathed in secrecy, the development for the petite British car began in 1957 and was only referred to as "ADO 15." It took just two and a half short years of design and development for Lord to approve the first MINIs for production, and on August 26th, 1959, the Morris Mini-Minor and Austin Seven were introduced to the public for the first time. The only difference between the two models was the radiator grille, and after a few years both models were simply referred to as "the Mini." The design of these new cars was not only meant to optimize fuel-usage, but to maximize functional space inside these miniature cars as well. Just ten feet in length, the original MINIs were surprisingly spacious with the ability to seat four adults comfortably with plenty of room in the trunk. And starting at $800, these new British cars quickly became "the people's car."
