Did you know the original Mini Cooper was a solution to a fuel shortage? That vision has carried through to MINI's latest endeavor; a specially prepared, electrified take on the classic MINI.

Although primarily intended to promote the MINI brand at the New York International Auto Show and raise awareness for the road-ready version of the MINI Electric Concept, the classic MINI Electric is based on a late model run of the original Cooper.

The MINI Electric Concept will enter production at the Oxford plant in 2019, though details on its powertrain have been kept to a minimum.

"The classic MINI Electric combines the historic look of the world's favorite small car with groundbreaking drive technology for tomorrow's urban mobility," they said in a statement. This unique retro throwback both honors the past and embraces the future as it makes a clear statement of its commitment to zero local emission technology.

MINI firmly believes that electric powertrains are one of the best solutions to common problems drivers experience today. The characteristic of electric powertrains such as compact dimensions, simple design, and responsive torque, make them a perfect fit for MINI and their unmistakable character. MINI is expected to debut the production-ready, two-door hardtop variant of the MINI Electric sometime later this year.

The classic MINI Electric will be on display at this year's 2018 New York International Auto Show from March 30 through April 8.
